In this two-part series on growing herbs, I go through the basics of nine herbs I grow: basil, dill, cilantro, parsley, rosemary, oregano, thyme, sage, and chives. In today's episode I'll tackle the first four, also known as the "annual" herbs in my area. These are the ones that don't come back year after year. Today you'll learn:

  • which to start from seed and which to purchase as transplants
  • the unique growth habits of basil
  • what it means when basil sends flowers, and what to do about it
  • how to let each plant produce their own seeds, so you'll never have to buy them again
  • a trick I use to ensure a basil harvest year after year with only 5 minutes of active work
  • the difference between dill weed and dill seed
  • why cilantro is so fussy and how to grow it
  • the risk you take when planting parsley from seed
